Sweet Potato Toast – Food Trend

sweet potato toast recipe

Easy and delicious Sweet Potato Toast topping ideas.

I will admit that I was late to the Avocado Toast game and I regret that I didn’t get on that bandwagon sooner. I feel like Avocado Toast somewhat completes my life. Sounds a little drastic but I probably have avocado toast at for either breakfast, lunch or snack at least 3 times a week.

When I first saw Sweet Potato Toast becoming a thing on social media, I decided to give it a try right out of the gate. I like sweet potatoes, so I felt that Sweet Potato Toast would be a good food trend to review.

If you haven’t seen or heard of Sweet Potato Toast, it’s basically using thick slices of sweet potatoes in a “toast” like manner and adding toppings such as avocado, peanut butter & banana, tomato, etc. The interesting part is that you can cook the sweet potato in a toaster!

So I gave it a whirl. I cut the slices of sweet potato lengthwise in about 1/4 inch slices and popped them in the toaster. It took 3 cycles in the toaster before they were complete but I was very surprised that cooking them in the toaster actually worked.

I love that the topping choices are endless and there are so many options are available I topped one of mine with arugula, smoked salmon, tomatoes, salt, pepper and fresh dill. The other, I topped with creme fraiche, sliced avocado, red pepper flakes and olive oil.

My Review –

I liked the Sweet Potato Toast and I think it’s a great option for those that can’t or don’t want to eat toast. The sweet potato actually holds up quite nicely and doesn’t fall apart under the toppings like I thought it would. I will be completely honest though and say that it just doesn’t offer the same texture or “crunch” that toast does in my opinion. The sweet potato itself is also a little bit sweet, so it offsets the flavors of the toppings you add. I do think it would be fantastic with some almond butter and sliced banana on top.

In conclusion, I enjoyed the Sweet Potato Toast but find it in second place compared to avocado toast using actual bread.

Have you tried this food trend yet, what did you think?
