Hi, I’m Brynn, a Mediterranean Diet Registered Dietitian, and welcome to my blog!

My Background

Professionally I have been a Registered Dietitian for past 13 years. After changing my major four times in college, I stumbled across a nutrition class (thanks to general education requirements!) and was hooked after just one Intro to Nutrition course. I graduated with a B.S. Degree in Nutrition & Food Science, completed my Dietetic Internship and then passed my Registered Dietitian exam. Since then, my work experience has included many different settings including health clubs, hospitals, school districts and retirement communities.

In 2013 my husband and I decided to start a family and I left my job as a Director of Nutrition to stay home and raise our daughter. In late 2014, we added another little one to our family, and now I’m a stay at home mom to a 6 year old daughter and 4 year old son.

Needless to say, my days at home with my kids are much different than my corporate days, but I still have the same passion for health and nutrition, especially when it comes to creating a healthy lifestyle for my family.

Falling in Love with The Mediterranean Diet

We’ve been extremely lucky to be able to travel and while spending time in France, Italy and Greece, I became enamored and captivated by the Mediterranean lifestyle and culture. I believe that the basics of the mediterranean diet can not only help with disease prevention but also lead to a better relationship with food and put the fun and family back into meal times.

My goal with this blog is to share my tips and tricks for creating mediterranean inspired meals that fit into everyday life.

I wish I could say that my recipes and knowledge of the mediterranean diet and lifestyle were passed down from generations of family, but they aren’t. I love the history and tradition of the mediterranean lifestyle but my view is simply that of an observer and student of this beautiful culture.

So this place is my way of sharing tips, recipes and ways to incorporate a mediterranean inspired diet and lifestyle into anyone’s home.

My Mediterranean Diet Food Philosophy

I like to consider myself a realistic Mediterranean Diet Registered Dietitian. By that I mean that I aim to eat healthy but I also believe that food is meant to be shared, enjoyed, loved and celebrated.

I LOVE food and I truly believe that you can maintain a healthy and nutritious lifestyle while still enjoying your favorite foods. I don’t agree with cutting entire food groups completely out of your diet (unless it’s for medical reasons) and saying you can never ever have a certain food again.

I fell in love with the Mediterranean style of eating and culture when I was fortunate to visit France, Italy and Greece on multiple occasions. I believe that the Mediterranean Diet has the ability to become a lifestyle for many that focuses on eating fresh, healthy, flavorful foods and bringing back the social aspect of meals. Not to mention the health benefits associated with this style of eating.

The Key Characteristics of a Mediterranean Diet

The Mediterranean Diet is a healthy eating pattern and lifestyle that focuses on –

  • Eating primary plant based foods –  fruit and vegetables, whole grains, legumes, seeds and nuts
  • Focusing on fresh and local food instead of pre-packaged, heavily processed foods
  • Eating fish at least 2 times a week
  • Moderate intake of dairy
  • Limiting red meat consumption
  • Focusing on heart healthy fats instead of saturated fats and trans fats (ie olive oil in place of butter)
  • Using fresh herbs and spices to flavor foods in place of salt
  • Limiting refined grains and added sugars
  • Red Wine in moderations
  • Enjoying meals with family and friends
  • Being active and getting plenty of exercise
