Souvlaki Inspired Grilled Chicken Platter with Spicy Yogurt Sauce

A twist on souvlaki, this grilled chicken platter features lemon & herb marinaded chicken, simple but flavorful veggies & spicy yogurt sauce.

Great for sharing or weekly meal prep, this Lemon & Herb Grilled Chicken Platter is our take on chicken souvlaki and features all the same great flavors and ingredients, just served on a platter instead of skewers.

Chicken Souvlaki with a Twist

We ordered take out from one of our favorite local Greek restaurants the other night and it reminded me how much I love souvlaki.

Souvlaki is simply the Greek dish consisting of marinated meat or chicken on a skewer. It’s typically served with pita bread, tomatoes, parsley, onions, and yogurt or tzatziki. It’s a widely popular dish in Greece and is often considered “fast food” as people can eat the souvlaki right off the skewer.

This is our take on chicken souvlaki, just without the skewers and served family style. It’s great for a shared dinner or even meal prepping for a week’s worth of lunches.

Grilled Chicken with a Simple Marinade

Our souvlaki inspired recipe starts with grilled chicken that is marinated in olive oil, greek seasoning and lemon juice. In traditional souvlaki, the chicken would be grilled and served on a skewer. In our recipe, we simply placed the chicken directly on the grill for easier serving.

You can use any type of chicken you prefer. Since I was using this dish to create easy lunches for the week, I simply used chicken breast tenders. They are thin and grill quicker than chicken breasts or thighs.

I like to make my own Greek Seasoning Blend with dried basil, dill, garlic, onion, oregano, lemon peel, and a dish of cinnamon and nutmeg. I make a batch and store it in a jar in my spice cabinet. However, you can also use store bought seasoning if you prefer.

A Platter Full of Fixings

The fixings are my personal favorite. They are simple ingredients but add so much flavor to this dish.

You can switch up the ingredients to your liking, but we included –

  • sliced red onion
  • diced cucumber
  • crisp romaine hearts
  • kalamata olives
  • crumbled feta cheese
  • sliced tomato
  • mini naan
  • fresh herbs

We set up this grilled chicken dish to be served as a build your own, family style platter. Some people used the romaine hearts to create wraps, others ate it more salad style. You could also serve with full size pitas or flatbread to use for wraps. The world is your oyster.

Spicy Yogurt Sauce

Traditionally souvlaki is served with tzatziki, a cucumber and garlic yogurt sauce. We wanted to spice it up a little bit and served this Spicy Yogurt on the side instead.

This yogurt sauce is so so good! It’s a blend of Greek yogurt, lemon juice, garlic, sriracha, and spices (cayenne, cumin, salt, pepper). It has quickly become my favorite to have on hand for so many dishes.
