Valentine’s Day Treats

valentines treat

There is nothing cuter than 12 little preschoolers passing out their Valentine’s Day treats and cards while decked out in a spectrum of red and pink. Their little smiles are so sweet while they pass out the cards that they spent thirty minutes choosing from the sea of princesses and disney character choices and the tiny exclamations when they discover that someone else brought “Elsa!” or “Paw Patrol”! It is too cute.

I volunteered to bring a little snack for the kids in Sophie’s preschool class to enjoy during their Valentine’s Day party yesterday. A fellow preschooler mom asked if since I was a dietitian that meant I was going to bring in something healthy. I think she assumed that my kids don’t eat snacks or junk food. Trust me people, they do.

Life is all about balance and I think it’s the same whether you are 30 or 3 years old. My kids like fruit, fish, broccoli and other healthy foods, but they also love cookies, popsicles, and candy. [blockquote size=”full|half|third|fourth|two-thirds|three-fourths” align=”left|center|right”]I try to serve the former more than the latter, but somedays you just have to use that free cookie at the grocery store to get through the shopping trip, if you know what I mean. [/blockquote]

So, I brought in a snack that I thought was well balanced, fun, and festive. It was also fitting since preschool is at 9:00am and those poor teachers don’t need a dozen sugar crazed kids running around.

I cut little strawberries into the shape of a heart (just used a little paring knife) and skewered them onto a little stick with a couple blueberries in between. I paired them with a little heart shaped Rice Krispie treat and called it a day. Viola, a balance between a little sugary snack and some healthy fruit.

The best part was that Sophie helped me make the treats. She loves helping in the kitchen and I think teaching them about food is a great way to get them interested in different types of food.
