One of the biggest complaints I hear from clients and friends about trying to eat healthier is that it’s boring. A lot of the time, I think that people think eating healthy means plain chicken, dried fish, steamed vegetables, and other dishes with zero flavor.
While it’s true that you have to watch out for sauces when trying to adopt a healthier lifestyle, since they can be full of empty calories and extra fat, you cannot expect to live off of bland, flavorless chicken, fish or meat. It’s important to make sure that you find foods you actually like and look forward to eating (and making) when trying to create a healthy lifestyle for yourself and/or your family.
Eating healthy doesn’t have to mean skimping out on flavor or delicious food. There are so many ways to add great flavors to food without adding extra calories or fat. Fresh herbs, lemon and other fruits, and spices can add such great flavor and still help you maintain your healthy lifestyle.
I love finding new ways to jazz up an ordinary dinner, such as baked chicken or grilled salmon. This Spicy Pineapple Salsa does just that. We had it the first night on grilled salmon and then again the following night on baked chicken. It is so flavorful! Fresh and just a little bit spicy, it’s the perfect topping. It added so much flavor that Dan and I both cleaned our plates.
The best part is that is so simple to make, uses fresh ingredients and it’s even better tasting the second day (after the flavors have had a chance to marinade together).
We had a little bit leftover on the third day and I actually just ate it straight out of the bowl…it’s that good!
What’s one of your favorite ways to add flavor to an ordinary dish?
