I love cookbooks and especially ones geared towards healthy recipes. Today I’m sharing my thoughts on Serena Ball and Deanna Segrave-Daly’s newest cookbook – The Sustainable Mediterranean Diet Cookbook.
Disclaimer – I receive a free copy of this book, however all opinions expressed are fully my own.
Cookbook Authors Unite
Serena and Deanna are no strangers to cookbook writing, they’ve written the best selling cookbook – The 30 Minute Mediterranean Diet Cookbook (which I have and LOVE by the way).
As a fellow cookbook author, I know the time, tears and hard work that goes into writing a cookbook. My book, The Mediterranean Diet Made Easy Cookbook was published in 2000 and still available if you are looking for a great addition to your collection.
I always love supporting fellow Dietitian authors but more than that, I’m a huge fan of Serena and Deanna. Their recipes area always fantastic and they do a great job of using everyday ingredients and nothing too fancy or time consuming to create delicious meals.
The Sustainable Mediterranean Diet Cookbook
Right off the bat, I loved that this cookbook focuses on not only the Mediterranean diet but also sustainability. Each recipe has great tips that can help reduce food waste by giving ideas on how to repurpose leftovers or reuse ingredients used a particular recipe.
Many of the recipes give you tips on how to freezer and reheat leftovers, which is always appreciated. Some of the recipes even give ideas on how to repurpose the scraps or carrot tops, hulls of strawberries, etc. Just genius!
Recipes I Tried
When going through the book to find a few recipes I wanted to test out, I had a hard time just picking a few. There are so many interesting and delicious sounding recipes in this book that I can’t wait to make.
For the sake of this review, I narrowed it down to two to start.
Swirled Beet and Lemon Yogurt Dip
This dip is everything the recipe promises – light, fresh and vibrant.
Beets can be a tricky ingredient to work into your meals. Especially if you don’t like the earthy flavor that fresh beets can have. I love that this recipe gives you to go ahead for using canned beets, or even pickled beets if you prefer.
The beets are pureed and combined with creamy Greek yogurt, zesty lemon, dill and honey to create a beautiful swirled dip.
I served mine with toasted bread but then also tried it with pita chips and raw veggies. All were fantastic.

Spiced Turkish coffee Cake
I have a soft spot in my heart for coffee cake. They always remind me of my grandma, who loved to bake and always had a fresh coffee cake ready when friends dropped by to chat.
This Spice Turkish Coffee Cake is delightful and surprisingly pretty easy to make. I love that it’s gluten free and uses oats instead of flour as a base. The combination of spices – cinnamon, nutmeg, sugar and cardamom are just heavenly.
The addition of strong coffee adds such a great flavor. And you know I love any baked good that has a crunchy topping. This cake is topped with a blend of oats and walnuts seasoned with a bit of olive oil and spices.
A Great Cookbook for any Collection
So far, I am very impressed and would recommend this cookbook to anyone looking for realistic but delicious Mediterranean diet inspired recipes that also focus on food waste and sustainability.
