Enjoying Seafood as part of The Mediterranean Diet

The Mediterranean Diet and Seafood go hand in hand. Aiming to incorporate seafood about twice a week into your diet is recommended by the American Heart Assocation.

We recently brought a serving of the Wild Alaskan Coho Salmon with us camping. We used the simple recipe that came with the Sitka Salmon Shares box that was called “Captain Eric Jordan’s Easy Peasy Salmon“. It was easy. And delicious. And every single last flake/crumb/drop was eaten. Man it was good!

Intimidation when it comes to cooking Seafood?

Incorporating more seafood into your diet sounds simple but there is a huge intimidation factor for a lot of people. Common concerns when it comes to buying and preparing fish at home include –

  • How do you know what kind of fish to buy? Farm raised? Wild caught? Fresh? Frozen? Color added?
  • Where can you purchase seafood from a trustworthy source?
  • How to find seafood that’s sustainably caught and takes environmental concerns into consideration?
  • Once you find a certain fish, how should you prepare it?

Working with Sitka Salmon Shares

We are no strangers to delicious and healthy salmon recipes here at The Domestic Dietitian. Favorites include this Cast Iron Salmon, Fish Taco Wraps and Healthy Baked Fish Sticks. But we are the first to admit that it took us awhile before we felt comfortable cooking with fish at home.

That’s why we are ecstatic to be working with Sitka Salmon Shares as an affiliate member.

What is Sitka Salmon Shares?

In a nutshell, Sitka Salmon Shares is a members based organization where you sign up to purchase your “share” of a monthly seafood harvest from one of their independent, small boat, family fishermen.

Similar to produce boxes ordered through a local CSA, the Sitka Salmon Shares program is membership into a CSF = Community Supported Fishery. You enroll at 3-9 month intervals (although you can cancel anytime) for one of the various seafood box options available online. Each monthly “share” is specific to what the fishermen’s wild Alaskan catch contains (approximately 4.5-5 lbs of seafood) and what time of year it is.

Once a month, your Sitka Salmon Shares box will arrive on your doorstep. Inside will be your individual portions of each catch that month, vacuum-sealed and blast frozen. Along with recipe ideas for the fish pertaining to your delivery that month and stories about the company and the actual fisherman that catch the seafood.
