I love celebrating the start of the weekend with Friday Pizza Night! It’s easy, fun and a family favorite. Recently, I decided to improve our weekly pizza night ritual by making the pizza crust from scratch, using Fleischmann’s® RapidRise® Yeast.

How to Make Your Own Pizza Dough

This 30-minute homemade pizza crust recipe was the base of this Mediterranean Style Pizza. Trust me when I say that it could not be easier to make this pizza dough.

Tips for Using Fleischmann’s® RapidRise® Yeast –

  • Be sure to follow the simple instructions on the back of the packet of yeast.
  • Make sure that your yeast packet is not expired. This is often the main reason why yeast doesn’t “rise”.
  • The water you use to mix with the yeast should be lukewarm (120-130 degrees F). If the water is too hot, it will kill the yeast. Use a thermometer to check the temperature.

  1. Mix the dry ingredients together in a large bowl (flour, yeast, sugar, salt).
  2. Add the warm water (120-130 degrees F) and oil, stir to combine.
  3. Slowly add additional flour until a soft, sticky dough forms.
  4. Turn out onto a floured surface.
  5. Kneed the dough until it becomes elastic and smooth.
  6. Form into a ball and allow to rise for just 10 minutes.
  7. Use a rolling pin to form a large, 12″ pizza.

I chose this Mediterranean inspired pizza by topping the pizza with hummus in place of traditional pizza sauce. It gave the pizza such a creamy texture and flavor. Then I topped it off with slices of fresh mozzarella, artichoke hearts, cherry tomatoes, kalamata olives, sliced red bell pepper and garnished it all with fresh basil once it was done cooking. The end result was a flavor packed, veggie filled pizza where the star was definitely the homemade crust! The taste is just second to none, but more than that, it was such a joy to cook from scratch with my little ones and then see their faces when they shared what we made at the dinner table.

Ingredients

For The Homemade Pizza Dough

  • 1 3/4 - 2 1/4 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 envelope Fleischmann's® RapidRise® Yeast
  • 1 1/2 tsp sugar
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 2/3 cup very warm water 120-130 degrees F (test with thermometer)
  • 3 tbsp Canola oil

For the Pizza

  • 1 1/2 cups hummus
  • 2 ounces fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced
  • 1/2 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 1 cup artichoke hearts, well drained
  • 1/4 cup kalamata olives, sliced
  • 1/4 bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp fresh basil, chopped for garnish

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F
  • In a large bowl, combine 1 cup of the flour, packet of yeast, sugar and salt. Mix well
  • Add the warm water and oil to flour mixture and stir to incorporate
  • Slowly add additional flour until a sticky dough forms
  • Turn dough out of bowl onto a well floured surface
  • Using well floured hands, kneed dough until smooth and elastic. Form into a ball and allow to rest for 10 minutes
  • Use a rolling pin to roll dough out into a large circle
  • Place dough onto a well greased pizza dish or baking sheet
  • Top with hummus, mozzarella cheese, tomatoes, olives, artichoke hearts, and bell pepper
  • Place on bottom rack of oven and bake until crust is golden brown and cheese is bubbly, about 12-15 minutes
  • Remove from oven, garnish with fresh basil and enjoy
