Getting Kids to Eat Fruits and Veggies

My kids are pretty good eaters, but getting them to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables can be a huge struggle. Both of my kids have a small handful of favorite fruits and an even smaller handful of favorite vegetables.

The health benefits of plants – including fruits and vegetables – are numerous. They contain vitamins, minerals, nutrients and compounds that can help with growth, development, immune system function, concentration, brain health and much more.

One way that I’ve found to incorporate more fruits and vegetables into their diet is through smoothies.

Immune Boosting Ingredients

We recently talked about “immune boosting diets” and whether or not it’s a real thing or just a trendy hot topic these days. While the key to a high functioning immune system is a well balanced diet that includes a variety of whole foods there are certain nutrients that are essential for your immune system to function.

Read More about Immune Boosting Diets here.

Some dietary sources of the nutrients needed for proper immune function include (but aren’t limited to) –

  • berries
  • sweet potatoes
  • citrus
  • spinach
  • beans
  • omega 3s
  • antioxidant rich fruits and vegetables
  • nuts and seeds

Our Favorite Immune Boosting Smoothie

Smoothies are one of my favorite after school snacks to pack in some extra vitamins and minerals.

This Berry Banana Smoothie is our family’s current favorite. It’s simple to make and uses one of our favorite products to pack in some extra whole Foods based nutrients – Memore.

What is Memore?

We have partnered with Memore, a nutritional supplement beverage/daily greens powder, because we love their ingredients, products and focus on whole food nutrition for disease prevention.

Simply put, Memore is a gluten free, plant based, daily greens powder that can be easily added to smoothies or simply water to provide –

  • a whole host of vitamins and minerals
  • dietary fiber
  • one serving of dark green leafy vegetables in a single serving of memore
  • protein
  • antioxidants

Their ingredients are sourced from real, actual foods and include many of the immune boosting ingredients we talked about above –

  • sweet potatoes
  • blueberries
  • omega 3s
  • spinach
  • beets
  • garbanzo beans

They make a great tasting, Whole Foods focused, convenient product that helps fill in any nutritional gaps.

Berry Banana Smoothie

In addition to Memore, this smoothie contains 3 simple ingredients –

  • water
  • frozen banana
  • frozen berries

Everything gets put into the blender and combine to form a tasty, nutritious, immune boosting smoothie that everyone will love. Kids included!

Feel free to mix up the frozen fruit to fit your own preferences as well. We simply added a frozen mixed berry blend in this recipe but you can pick a single frozen berry if you prefer. Using frozen fruit and a frozen banana give the smoothie a thick texture without having to add additional ice.
