[lead]If you ask me to pick my favorite meal, without hesitation, I would say brunch. [/lead]
I just like the vibe of brunch. I love that it’s perfectly acceptable to casually arrive at 10:30am (I’m so not a morning person), sweet and savory dishes are both equally in attendance on the menu, and most of all that cocktails are encouraged. This is my kind of meal.
It was after enjoying many, many brunches that I fell in love with the Bloody Mary. Probably one of my favorite cocktails ever. I love that the base is tomato juice (kinda feels healthy), spiked with horseradish and pepper for a little kick, and it’s topped off with an array of garnishes. Celery, pickles, olives, bacon, peppers, green beans…the garnish game is strong when enjoying a bloody mary. Nothing beats the enjoying the taste of a vodka soaked green olive or snacking on a crunchy bacon slice before your meal even arrives.
However, I discovered while trying to recreate a bloody mary at home, many of the pre-made mixes leave a lot to be desired. They either don’t really have any taste at all, or they leave you with such an acidic aftertaste that you can’t really enjoy your entire cocktail. On another note, many of the mixes also contain high fructose corn syrup or other additives that you don’t really need.
So, thru trial and error, I developed my own recipe for The Best Bloody Mary. It’s flavorful and smooth but with a little kick. Perfect for brunches, jazzing up breakfast on the weekends, or (in my own recent experience) while camping. The best part is that you can use the freshest ingredients rather than the preservatives or other additives found in some mixes.
The Best Bloody Mary
Ingredients
- 4 cups tomato juice
- 2 Tbsp horseradish prepared
- 2 Tbsp worcestershire sauce
- 1/3 cup pickle juice
- 2 Tbsp lemon juice
- Juice from 3 limes
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 2 tsp celery salt
- 1 pinch cayenne pepper
- 1 tsp hot sauce
- 1/2 tsp fresh black pepper
- Vodka
Instructions
- Combine all ingredients (except vodka) in a blender and puree until smooth
- Taste and season with additional pepper or salt if necessary
- Fill tall glass with ice, add 2 oz vodka, then fill remainder of cup with tomato juice mixture
- Garnish was you like (celery, olives, bacon, pickles, peppers, limes, lemons, etc)
It’s so easy to make and you can adjust the seasonings to your liking. Therefore, you can as much spice as you like. Hope you enjoy!
