This Blackberry Moscow Mule is a trendy kombucha containing cocktail, offering the perfect mix of ginger and lime with less calories and sugar and gut healthy probiotics.

I’m a gal that enjoys a good cocktail now and then. I’ve previously shared some of my favorite cocktail recipes here on the blog, like my –

For this month’s The Recipe Redux post, we were challenged to create and share a probiotic/ gut healthy cocktail (or mocktail), since they’ve been popping up at trendy bars and restaurants recently. Trust me when I say this Blackberry Moscow Mule follows that food trend.

What is a Probiotic?

A probiotic is a way to provide healthy bacteria back to your gut. Probiotics are believed to aid in digestion and assist with inflammation. The average gut is a blend of good and bad bacteria, but when those levels of good vs bad bacteria get out of whack, people can experience numerous health problems. Consuming probiotics can help establish good bacteria in the GI tract to restore the proper ratio.

What is Kombucha?

This Blackberry Moscow Mule contains Kombucha in place of ginger beer. Kombucha is a fermented tea that has been around for thousands of years.

Kombucha is made by adding bacteria, yeast and sugar to black or green tea and allowing it to ferment. The result is a slightly carbonated, slightly sour drink that can be found at most local supermarkets.

The research on the health benefits of kombucha in human subjects is limited at this time, but it’s believed to provide probiotics and antioxidants when consumed. It also contains less sugar than other carbonated beverages, such as soda, making it a possible replacement for those trying to cut back.

Creating a Kombucha Cocktail

I used ginger-lemon flavored kombucha (Health-Ade is a personal favorite brand of mine taste and flavor wise) in place of ginger beer in this Blackberry Moscow Mule. The ginger gives the cocktail it’s traditional “bite” and the carbonation adds the perfect level of bubbly in this cocktail.

Replacing the ginger beer with kombucha also drastically reduces the amount of calories and sugar.

In an 8oz serving,

  • Ginger Beer contains 128 calories and 32 grams of sugar

  • Kombucha contains 35 calories and 5 grams of sugar

Same crisp, ginger flavor, with less than half the calories and sugars.

A little vodka, fresh blackberries and fresh lime juice finish off the cocktail, but you could easily omit the alcohol all together to create a delicious mocktail version.

Fun Tip – Freeze some fresh blackberries in an ice cube tray with water to dress up your cocktail’s ice!
