My Top 3 Cold Busting Remedies

cold remedies

[lead]These last two weeks I feel like my house has been hit with the plague. It’s like all the germs got together and decided to have a party at my house.[/lead]

You name it, someone had it…double ear infection, pneumonia, coughs, runny noses, and fevers. While antibiotics were needed to knock some out, the following are my go to cold remedies when I feel under the weather:

1. Homemade Bone Broth

  • In my family this is just referred to as “chicken soup”, as everyone in my family makes chicken soup from the bones of a roasted(or roasting) chicken.
  • Bone Broth has become quite the topic of discussion lately due to it’s inflammation reducing properties and health benefits. There is a great article on The Nourished Kitchen about bone broth.
  • It’s inexpensive and I like that it utilizes leftovers. I made a whole roasted chicken, using this awesome recipe from The Whole Smiths, and then the following day, used the leftover bones/carcass of the chicken to make the broth, using this recipe from The Wellness Mama

2. Hot Tea with Lemon, Honey and Ginger

  • I’m not a huge tea drinker (coffee all the way) but when I’m sick, there is nothing more soothing than a hot cuppa’ tea
  • I add a slice of lemon, a drizzle of honey (helps soothe a cough) and some fresh grated ginger

3. Tom Yum Goong (Spicy Thai Soup)

  • This spicy thai soup knocks your sinuses clear open
  • I always have a bowl when I’m congested and feel immediately like I can breath again after just a few spoonfuls
