Dinner Party Mayhem
Let me set the scene of how it looks at my house an hour before we are having people over for dinner…
I’m typically in my robe, frantically trying to finish my hair and makeup, while simultaneously picking up toys off the living room floor for the 100th time. Not to mention a last minute clean up in the guest bathroom. All the while getting annoyed with the hubby for his inability to read my mind and help me without me having to tell him what to do. Oh yeah, and preparing appetizers.
No matter how much I try to prepare, I am still left frantically running around getting stressed out and barely pulling everything together before our guests arrive.
A Simple Appetizer
I decided that while some aspects I can’t control. For example, the toys on the floor, having to ask 56 times to have the garbage taken out, or my hair not cooperating. I need a simple appetizer that can be made in advance but still tastes great.
Adding Hummus to your Appetizers
Hummus is one of my favorite appetizers and snacks. It’s simple, delicious, and always a crowd pleaser. I also love that it’s a plant based protein, so you can feel good about giving your guests something healthy to enjoy that’s still tastes great. It’s filling without being overly heavy, which is what you want in an appetizer. The hummus also provides a little bit of dietary fiber, which is the #1 Thing Missing from Our Diets.
It is important to note that not all hummus is created equal! There are many that have lots of preservatives added. While it is easy to make your own hummus, sometimes there just isn’t enough time to do so. Plus this recipe is inspired to be a party appetizer…which means any shortcuts that save time in the kitchen are a must.
So if you are looking for a store bought hummus, here are our two favorites –
- Hope Hummus
- Ingredients – Garbanzo Beans, Water, Tahini, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Sea Salt, Lemon Juice Concentrate, Cumin, Citric Acid, Garlic Powder, Black Pepper, Cayenne Pepper
- Haig’s Hummus
- Ingredients – Garbanzo Beans, Tahini, Lemon Juice, Water, Garlic, Spices, Sea Salt.
If you do have the time and want to make your own hummus, this is one of our favorite Homemade Hummus recipes. Just be warned, once you have homemade hummus, it’s hard to go back to store bought.
How To Make Wonton Cups
The beauty of these Vegetarian Wonton Bites is that the wonton cups can be made an entire day in advance. I simply bought square wonton wrappers at my local grocery store and then baked them in a muffin pan that had been sprayed with non-stick oil.
On the day of the party, all you have to do is fill each wonton cup with a little bit of hummus. I used just plain flavored hummus, but you can mix it up with a flavored variety of your choice. Then simply top with chopped carrots, green onion, peanuts, cilantro and drizzle with sriracha. This can be done up to two hours in advance and then held in the fridge until party time.

That sounds exactly like me before company comes over – totally digging these as a great appetizer option!
Thanks so much Deanna, hopefully it will help alleviate a little pre-party stress!
These are just too cute!! Can’t wait to try with hummus!
Thanks so much Katie!
100% with you re: being rushed before company arrives! Love these bites – such a creative use of hummus!
Thanks Jenny!
These bites look like the perfect easy appetizer! Crunchy and creamy all at the same time!
Thanks Alison, they are really good!
These look great and wouldn’t spoil dinner (party or no party).
This sounds like the perfect add for summer appetizer nights that I do with my kids when we all are too busy to stop. I wonder if you can go beyond a day in advance on the wrappers? For those even hotter nights of summer ahead. I’m getting tired of making toaster oven mini quiches and finger sandwiches.
I’m sure the wonton cups would last for a few days!
This looks delicious! How do you store your wonton cups when they are prepared a day ahead? Thanks!
Hi Debbie, I just place them in a sealable plastic bag and they are perfectly fine the next day.

Just note that typical wonton wrappers have egg in them, so this recipe isn’t vegan unless you buy vegan wonton wrappers (I’m sure they exist somewhere!)
Aaaaand I just saw the title says vegetarian, not vegan. My goof!
My family is not a fan of “hot” sriracha. Any other suggestion of a topping which is not spicy?
Hi Jean, thanks so much for stopping by and leaving a comment!
You could try a drizzle of olive oil or a light vinaigrette too in place of hot sauce.

These were great. Took to a party and let people put the different toppings on themselves (added cilantro, cucumber, avocado and crushed peanut as extra options). Also because some don’t like siracha, I made a delicious peanut sauce for the topping. They were a hit!
I always fall shot of options when it comes to vegetarian appetizers, and believe me, your recipe made my life easier. Thank you for sharing this. However, I have a small query, can I replace hummus with yogurt or cream cheese?
