Fall Seasonal Produce

The leaves are starting to fall, the weather has a morning crisp in the air, apples are a plenty and pumpkin everything lines the aisles of the grocery store.

Fall is here!

While we are typically summer people through and through, there is something beautiful about Fall. Plus the beauty of October Seasonal Produce is here for all of us to enjoy.

Why Choose Seasonal Produce?

Purchasing and using produce when it’s in season is often better quality, better flavor, a better price, and supports local farmers.

Have you ever tried a tomato in February…it’s not great. Now a vine ripened September tomato is juicy and so flavorful. That’s the difference between choosing seasonal produce.

It’s always important to note that seasonal produce will vary depending on where you live. However, this guide is meant to provide some of the most common fruits and vegetables available this month.

What’s in Season in October

This month is when the fall favorites are hitting their peak. A great array of fruits and veggies that can inspire and create flavorful dishes.

What to Make this Month

These are some of our favorite Mediterranean diet inspired recipes using all this delicious fall produce.

Apples

A top fall favorite! Plus the old An Apple a Day saying is true…apples are a crisp and naturally sweet fruit that also boast many health benefits.

Eggplant

It took us awhile to experiment cooking with eggplant. It just seemed so intimidating but now it’s one of our favorite ways to add heartiness and texture to plant based meals.

Mushrooms

A flavorful fall fungi! Mushrooms are especially great when trying to incorporate more Plant Based Meals into your diet because they have a texture that is similar to meat.

Spinach

We are huge fans of spinach, so much so that we wrote this 5 Ways to Enjoy Spinach post years ago.

Fun fact – to be able to better absorb the plant based iron found in spinach be sure to serve it with a little vitamin c. This can be drinking some lemon water with a spinach containing meal, drizzling a little fresh lemon or orange right on your spinach, adding tomato to a spinach dish, etc.

These Tomato and Spinach Egg Muffins are a great example of that.

savory quinoa breakfast bowl

This Savory Breakfast Bowl is a great example of fall inspired produce all in one bowl – spinach and mushrooms all on top of quinoa and hardboiled egg.

Squash

So many winter squashes are making their ways into the stores this month. Some of our favorites include acorn, butternut, and spaghetti squash.

Don’t fear the squash, there are so many great recipes out their for these vitamin packed veggies.

We are also huge fans of recipes that don’t require much cooking. this Easy Butternut Squash Soup comes from a package container and is creamy, smooth and so good!
